Exploring the secret Gili islands, Lombok

We had a couple of days to recover after climbing the awesome Mount Rinjani so we decided to check out the “secret Gili islands” in the south-west of Lombok.

We stayed at a lush hotel in Sekotong called Cocotinos, everyone was incredibly friendly and the food was excellent. You can book with this hotel here or see other options in the area here.

Cocotinos had their own diving and snorkelling team on site who took us out on a private tour round the neighbouring islands, the “secret Gilis”.

Gili Nanggu

We started with Gili Nanggu, the island seemed pretty deserted when we arrived but gradually got busier as the morning went on and the boats started arriving. If possible leave as early as possible with your guides! Gili Nanggu had an incredible and thriving coral reef, it’s definitely more alive than the reef we saw in Gili Meno.

We saw all sorts of fish, the native blue coral, blue and red ‘sea stars’ (starfish) and a small stingray. Annoyingly we forgot the GoPro for the first half hour or so, so we missed quite a bit on camera, nightmare. Here’s what we captured on our second swim out…

We then headed over to Gili Kedis or the ‘honeymoon island’, romantically named as it could only fit two people on comfortably. Again this got pretty popular as the morning went on.

We were really lucky to arrive early before everyone else, so got some really good and empty time in the waters around the island. It was also the perfect opportunity to take some photos before the selfie-insta-masses descended on us.

There isn’t as much coral round this island but there’s loads of sea-stars in the sea grass. In the reef round the front of the island we spotted a lion-fish. Our guide was amazing at pointing out everything hiding as we swam over.

Gili Sudak

We finished up by having lunch on Gili Sudak, where you can get fresh fish on the beach as well as a range of local dishes.

We rode on the top of the boat back to the mainland and enjoyed the scenery of Lombok for the last time before we had to pack up and head out in the morning.
