For our very first trip abroad together, Dan and I went to Croatia with some friends for five days. We were staying in Rovinj and hired a car to explore the area. We’d recommend looking at getting a vehicle for your time there as most of the main attractions are only accessible by car.
Here are our top three picks…
Poreč – old town
We spent an afternoon having a wander around Poreč’s beautiful old town. The town’s Basilica is a UNESCO World heritage site and Poreč’s oldest parts date back to 4th century. It has an obvious Venetian influence with the back to back housing and sloping church tower.
It’s relatively small and you can generally see everything in a couple of hours. So it’s perfect to relax with a drink at the restaurants on the waterfront, then walk it off up to the tower to enjoy the views.
Around 20 minutes north of Rovinj is the Lim Fjord, this stunning geographic feature is well worth a visit.
The valley itself is 35 km long, with the river Pazinčica running through it, which then opens up into the bay. It’s a gorgeous stop off for some pictures and meeting other tourists.
The water is a breeding ground for fish and fresh shellfish, which you can taste in the two restaurants on the bay.
Cycling along the coastal trail in Rovinj
We had one slightly cooler day which was perfect for cycling around the coastal trails so we headed straight for Golden Cape Forest Park and rented some bikes. We snaked our way through forest and along the coastal path, it’s really geared up for cycling so great for kids too.
There are little restaurants and bars along the way, as you cycle through woodland and out to the waterside. There are also tennis courts next to the bike rental and a water ski-lift a short ride away – a little something for everyone.
Croatia is definitely somewhere we will be going back to. We’ve barely scratched the surface and would love to see more. Let us know your favourite parts of Croatia in the comments, we’d love some recommendations!
